Dreams!

When I was young, my dad told me that dreams were just stories that could not be completed in reality. Our sub-conscious mind is good at joining the dots and weaves these threads of incomplete tales to present a picture we would like to see. While most of the dreams would fall into that definition, I never really understand why we have nightmares? Or even if we don't go to that extreme, why do we dream about something and wake up completely terrified. It ought to have as much as meaning as the good dreams. And ever wonder, why we remember nightmares much more clearly and in detail, than any other dreams. Or how much closer the scary dreams are to reality than the lofty happy ones. I guess our sub-conscious is way faster than our conscious mind at detecting a potential threat. Many people might not believe it, but I think nightmares or scary dreams are a way of preparing us for the impending misfortune or in the least warning us of our actions that might hurt if we don't change our course. Now I am not talking about psychic abilities here, but what I mean is, all along our lives through the various experiences that we accumulate, our mind records the important stuff and weaves it into a web that can prevent us from falling into the same trap again. You might not realize it, but I guess our sub-conscious knows what damages us inside out and tries to protect us from a self-sabotage through dreams. Well, in regards to this conjecture, there might be many questions and many loop-holes in my argument as well but the biggest evidence of such a possibility are the dreams I have been having for the last couple of days. They brought back old fears but at the same time for some reason, I have stopped myself from making old mistakes again.
